M. Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of Season in Overtime

2/15/2013 11:49:00 PM

The Men's Lacrosse Team came so close to winning their third in a row, but was outscored 3-1 by a stubborn St. Andrews University in the final quarter to tie the match at 13-13 and force overtime.  At the end of the third quarter it looked as if the Bees had the game under control.  They had outscored the Knights of St. Andrews 7-4 in the quarter and had a two-goal lead.  .

It looked especially good for SCAD as they scored an early goal in the 4th quarter to push the lead to three at 13-10.  The Knights seemed defeated.  They were forced to call a time-out and regroup.  Over the next 14 minutes St. Andrews fought back and slowly changed the course of the match.  They scored at the 8:15 mark in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to two.  A minute later they scored again and the Bees were holding on to a one-goal lead.  The clock was ticking away until the 2:31 mark when the Knights struck again for a tie at 13-13.  When the horn sounded to end regulation, the score was still knotted at 13 and the match was forced to sudden death overtime.

Two and a half minutes into the overtime St. Andrews struck the final blow on an unassisted score and took what seemed to be a victory away from the Bees.  It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bees, who had scored 50 goals in their first two games, but could not mount a score in the last 16 minutes of the game.

There was, however, superlative play from a number of Bees' players.  Cody Sienkiewicz scored 4 goals on just 6 shots.  Shelton Polka had 3 goals of his own and added an assist for good measure.  Nate Travis and Mike McQuaid had two goals apiece, while Matt Dean and Shawn Horsey chipped in one each.

The stats that hurt the Bees the most were obviously the 14 goals scored by the Knights, but also the 20-9 face-offs that were won by their opponents.  It seemed that SCAD was constantly being pushed on defense.  The Bees played hard the entire game, but it was a tough loss.  SCAD falls to 2-1 on the season.

The Bees have no time to dwell on what might have been.  They are back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. to play host to the Coast Guard at the SCAD Sports Complex.  Come out and support your high scoring Bees.
