Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Big Against Ga. Southern

4/15/2012 2:46:00 PM

The men's lacrosse team had a must win game with SELC rival Ga. Southern.  The must win scenario was for the purpose of being among those colleges selected by the SELC for tournament play.  The MCLA Tournament is held on 5/13 and seeding for the tournament is based on the SELC standings, as well has head-to-head competitions if there were a tie breaker needed.

SCAD came into the game with Ga. Southern in a close reace with conference rivals Florida Gulf Coast and Palm Beach Atlantic.  A loss to Ga. Southern would be a major setback for the Bees in the selection process.  The Bees entered  the contest with the Eagles with an 8-3 overall record and a 2-1 conference record.

Given the importance of tournament selection one would expect a little tightness among the Bees.  And in reality, the play was somewhat cautious in the first quarter of play.  SCAD broke out early in the first quarter with its first goal coming at the 13:47 mark.  The second goal came much later in the quarter at the 7:41 mark.  However, the Bees played tough defense and held the Eagles scoreless in the period.  At the end of the first quarter SCAD held a 2-0 lead.

It was in the second quarter that the Bees put some distance between them and the Eagles.  Leading the way in the first half was Derek Shurson who had three of the goals scored as well as one assist.  A milestone was reached by senior Shurson.  His third goal of the half marked the 100th goal of his lacrosse play at SCAD.  Congratulations Derek!

Jordy McManus added two goals, while Trey McKay and Mike McQuaid added one each.  At the end of the first half of play the Bees held a 7-2 advantage over the Eagles.

The second half started strong for SCAD,  They extended their lead to 13-2 when they registered six more scores.  In the final quarter the Bees focused more on defense and were very successful in holding Ga. Southern to one lone goal.  The final score was SCAD 13, Ga. Southern 3.

Scoring was spread among eight Bees.  Shurson and McManus had three apiece, Aaron Farabee had two, while McQuaid, McKay, Matt Dean, Henry Mann, and Dan Ogren each had one.  Contributing to the thirteen goals scored were McQuaid and Shurson who had three assists each.  Eric Elmquist and McManus assisted on one score each.

Noteworthy were the faceoffs won by Justin Sicard who managed 10 of 14 possessions for the Bees.  Equally commendable was the work of goalie Wade Winebrenner who had eleven saves in the game and held down the scoring of the Eagles to only three after four quarters of play.

It was a good victory for the Bees who now await the word for the tournament selection.  Way to go Bees!!
