MOBILE, Ala. – Concordia (Calif.) University rallied to win the final three singles matches for a 5-4 victory over SCAD Savannah in the second round of the 2011 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Wednesday (May 18) afternoon on the Copeland-Cox Tennis Courts at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The Eagles, who are seeded seventh in the 24-team tournament, improved to 15-7 and they will face No. 2 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University in a 1 p.m. Central quarterfinal match Thursday (May 19). The 10th-seeded Bees ended their season at 11-3.
Concordia started the five-hour marathon match by taking a 2-1 lead after the doubles. SCAD's
Hillary Collins and
Magdalena Bresson captured the Bees' lone win at No. 2 doubles with an easy 8-1 victory.
The Bees started strong in singles action as SCAD captured the first set in all six matches. SCAD took a 4-2 lead as
Theresa Schmaus (No. 2, 6-4, 6-4), Bresson (No. 3, 6-0, 6-3) and
Stephanie Gula (No. 5, 6-3, 6-4) all won in straight sets. Concordia began their comeback as Bettina Radke claimed a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over
Hillary Collins at No. 1 singles to pull within a point at 4-3.
SCAD had two chances to claim the win.
Courtney Collins defeated Kristin Yep 6-2 in the first set of No. 4 singles and was up 5-4 in the second set before Yep rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker. Yep won the third set 6-2 and tied the match at 4. The second opportunity for the Bees came at No. 6 singles.
Charlotte Debrey defeated Summer Beaird 6-2 in the first set and was ahead 4-0 in the second-set tiebreaker, before Beaird reeled off six unanswered points en route to a 7-5 win. Beaird outlasted Debrey 6-3 in the final set as the Eagles clinched the match.
