DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The top two seeds won out in the semifinals of The Sun Conference tournament Friday (April 15) as No. 1 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University and No. 2 SCAD Savannah won their respective matches to advance at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
The first semifinal of the day saw SCAD, which is ranked No. 9 nationally, blank St. Thomas (Fla.) University, which is ranked No. 18, 5-0. After handily winning all three doubles matches, the Bees went up 4-0 when
Theresa Schmaus bested Manuela Gil 6-0, 6-2 and clinched the win thanks to Charlotte DeBrey's 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Lauren Lightfoot at No. 6 singles.
The Bees (10-1) will meet the Eagles, who defeated No. 4 seed Webber International University 5-0, in the 1 p.m. title match Saturday (April 16). The winner earns the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship in Mobile, Ala., May 17-21.
