HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The Savannah College of Art and Design men's lacrosse team held off Kennesaw State University 9-6 in a battle of nationally ranked teams Saturday (April 3) afternoon at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The Bees, who are ranked No. 9 in the Prodigy MCLA Division II Top 25 Poll, extended their university-record winning streak to eight matches as they improved to 9-3. The Owls, who are ranked No. 16, slipped to 10-3.
SCAD returns to action with a Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division II South Division match against Georgia Southern University Friday (April 9) at 7 p.m. at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
SCAD took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the match on back-to-back goals by
Shelton Polka and
Trey McKay before Kennesaw State got a goal.
Darren Martin gave the Bees a 3-1 lead in the late stages of the first quarter.
SCAD added three more goals – Polka, McKay and
Jordy McManus - in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead into the half. The Owls got back into the game as they scored twice in the third quarter on man-advantage situations.
Michael Molinaro started the final period with a man-up goal to give the Bees a 7-4 lead. Twice the Owls got within two goals the rest of the game, but that would be as close as they would get.
SCAD goalie
Wade Winebrenner recorded 20 saves. McKay led the Bees with three goals and an assist while Polka added two goals, two assists and 10 ground balls. Shurson contributed a goal and two assists while
Dan Ogren tallied an assist.
Cody Hoerauf added six ground balls while
Derek Superville and
Justin Sicard added five each. Martin and
Dan Comite also had four ground balls for SCAD.
