HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The Savannah College of Art and Design men's lacrosse team scored six unanswered goals in the second half as the Bees recorded an 11-6 victory over Georgia Southern University Friday (April 9) evening at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The ninth-ranked Bees won their university-record ninth consecutive match to improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division II South Division. SCAD clinched the division and earned an automatic berth in the SELC Division II Tournament that will be held in Duluth, Ga., in two weeks. The pairings for the tournament will be announced next week. SCAD closes out regular season play with a 2 p.m. match Saturday (April 10) against Wofford College at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
Trent Turner scored a goal for the Eagles in the opening minutes of the second half and gave Georgia Southern a 6-5 lead with 12:27 left in the third quarter. SCAD tied the match at 6 less than a minute later as
Justin Sicard found the back of the net.
Shelton Polka, who led the team with five goals, scored back-to-back goals to give the Bees the lead for goal at 8-6 with 5:21 left in the quarter. The Bees added insurance goals from
David Hicok, Polka and
Evan Hart to seal the win.
Trey McKay added two goals and an assist for the Bees while
Jordy McManus added a goal.
Derek Shurson led SCAD with three assists and
Michael Molinaro contributed one.
Goalie
Wade Winebrenner recorded 11 saves between the pipes. Sicard and
Darren Martin paced the defense with seven ground balls each. Polka tallied five ground balls while McManus and
Dan Comite recorded four each. Martin led SCAD with six takeaways while Comite and
Derek Superville each had five.
