Bees earn NAIA berth with 5-0 title win over Seahawks

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
The Savannah College of Art and Design women's tennis team repeated as The Sun Conference Tournament champions with a 5-0 win over Northwood (Fla.) University Saturday (April 18) at the Crotty Tennis Complex on the campus of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University.

The fifth-ranked Bees, who were making their fifth consecutive appearance in the title match, won their third consecutive title and earned the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship, which will be held May 12-16 in Mobile, Ala. The four-time conference champions improved to 10-2 while the 14th-ranked Seahawks slipped to 9-6.

SCAD swept through doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Irina Pljusznyin and Hillary Collins downed Mikaela Seger 8-2 at the top doubles spot and Romina Mrochen and Courtney Collins topped Marlyn Scerri and Evan Neujenauer 8-3 at No. 2. The match at No. 3 doubles was tightly contested and in the end it was the SCAD tandem of Stephanie Gula and Charlotte Debrey that edged Adi Jurman and Tesu Svenson 9-8, winning 7-1 in the tiebreaker.

The first singles match to finish was at No. 5 where Gula extended the SCAD lead to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jurman. The clincher came at the No. 3 spot where Mrochen beat Scerri 6-0, 6-3.
