HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - It was the
Derek Shurson show Sunday (March 29) evening at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The freshman attack from Woodbury, Minn., scored five goals and assisted on another as the 14th-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design men's lacrosse snapped a four-match losing streak with their 8-4 decision over No. 10 Charlotte.
The Bees improved to 4-10 and will next play Saturday (April 4) with a 4 p.m. contest against Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Shurson scored the first goal for the Bees at the 10:17 mark of the first quarter before the 49ers scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead after the end of the first period.
Shelton Polka scored off a
John Healy assist before Shurson deposited another goal in the net off an
Evan Hart assist to tie the match at 3 with 8:35 remaining in the first half.
Trey McKay gave the Bees the lead for good at 4-3 with 2:35 left before halftime off a Shurson assist as SCAD took advantage of being a man up.
Shurson scored the Bees' first two goals of the second half to give the Bees a 6-3 lead with 5:49 to go in the third quarter. McKay tallied an assist on the first one while
Brandon Ussery had the other. The 49ers got one of the goals back 20 seconds later; however, Shurson quelled any thoughts of a Charlotte come back as he scored his final goal with 2:29 to play in the quarter to give the Bees a 7-4 lead.
McKay added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter for the Bees.
