Bees sweep Brenau, Asbury in opening meet of 2009

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -
The Savannah College of Art and Design women's swimming team returned to the pool for the first time in 2009 Saturday (Jan. 10) afternoon and came away with wins over Brenau University and Asbury College.

The second-ranked Bees improved to 7-2 overall as they defeated Brenau 157-21 and Asbury 130-73. SCAD returns to action Saturday (Jan. 17) when they travel to Wingate, N.C., to take on NCAA Division II's Wingate University.

The Bees claimed wins in 10 of the 11 events competed, including wins in both relays. Kelsey Brosseau and Stephanie McNicol were double winners for the Bees in the meet. Brosseau took wins in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:08.19) and the 200 butterfly (2:14.98) while McNicol recorded victories in the 400 individual medley (4:23.76) and 500 freestyle (5:14.25).

Lizzie Harr (200 freestyle - 1:59.96), Cassie Dixon (100 freestyle - 53.76) and Mary Ashley Krough (200 backstroke - 2:10.67) also tallied wins for the Bees.

In the process of picking up the wins, the Bees now have every swimmer qualified at least one event for the upcoming NAIA National Championship that will be held in St. Charles, Mo., March 4-7. It's the fifth consecutive season the Bees have accomplished the feat.
