ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Ellert Hreinsson scored a goal and collected an assist as No. 20 Savannah College of Art and Design defeated Flagler College 4-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday (Sept. 29) night at a blustery Saints Field.
SCAD extended its win streak to six matches and raised its record to 7-2-0 while Flagler falls to 0-8-1. SCAD hosts Florida Southern College Wednesday (Oct. 3) at 7 p.m. at the Delta Athletic Complex.
After a scoreless half, the Bees applied the pressure to the Saint defense early and often. In the 51st minute,
Josiah Millar was 10 yards out and blasted a shot that hit the post, but in the 53rd minute Millar was able to convert. Hreinsson broke up the right sideline and sent a pass across to the far post where Millar was able to send the ball to the back of the net.
Matt Engele had a shot at a wide open goal in the 56th minute, but his shot hit the post. Flagler had its own chance to score an equalizer but Marcus Intek's header hit the crossbar in the 63rd minute.
In the 64th minute Hreinsson scored the insurance goal for the Bees off a pass from Kiernan Tracey.
Pat Nicholas and
Jon Gretar Olafsson added goals late in the match for SCAD.
Tommi Sarkkinen faced six shots and saved the only one that came on goal. Zach Volpi tallied five saves in his first collegiate start. Jacob Kellerman came in for the final eight-plus minutes and registered one save.
SCAD outshot Flagler 20-6 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. There were 41 fouls whistled and two Flagler players were issued red cards with one SCAD player being booked with a red.
