TAMPA, Fla.  —
The University of Tampa  women's swimming team held off the Savannah College of Art and Design Friday (Oct. 26) afternoon at the University of Tampa Swimming Complex.

The  meet came down to the final event—the 400-yard freestyle relay—as the Spartans recorded a 135.50-124.50 victory over the Bees.

Tampa  improved to 2-0 while  SCAD  fell to 0-1. The Bees return to the pool at 10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 27) when SCAD travels to Lakeland, Fla., when they face both Florida Southern College and Saint Leo University.

Each team won seven events as the women's meet came down to 400 freestyle relay. Tampa defeated the SCAD quartet of Lizzie Harr, Megan Lawless, Stephanie McNicol and Cassie Dixon by 1.43 seconds to clinch the meet for the Spartans. An example of how close the teams were came in the first event of the meet as SCAD and Tampa had the identical times (1:54.17) in the 200 medley relay.

“The women were fantastic,” said SCAD head coach Scott Rabalais. “We took the No. 12 team in NCAA Division II down to the last relay.  For their first meet, our girls were very gritty.”

Junior Rachel Fritts was the top women's swimmer for the Bees as she claimed three wins—100 butterfly (1:00.35), 200 butterfly (2:11.41) and 200 individual medley (2:14.10). Dixon also picked up two wins as she captured the 50 freestyle (24.71) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.44). McNicol picked up the other win for the Bees as she took the 1,000 freestyle (10.55.97) event.
