Before joining LaGrange, Berkland served as an assistant coach at Lasell College in Newton, MA for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, where her primary responsibility was the team's defense.  During her time at Lasell, the Lasers achieved their most wins in a season and achieved their highest stats in goals, assists, draw controls and caused turnovers.

Berkland played lacrosse at Bridgewater State, where she was named the New England Women's Lacrosse Association Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the First Team All-Conference Team as a senior in 2008.  As one of three captains, Bridgewater went undefeated in league play and was league champion her senior year.
