BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. — The No. 10 SCAD Savannah men's lacrosse team faced a tough road test on Sunday afternoon, falling 25-11 to No. 2 Madonna University at Pulliam Stadium.
Despite a resilient middle-half performance, the Bees were unable to overcome an early offensive surge from the Crusaders in the neutral-site matchup.
RECORDS: The Bees move to 7-1 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Madonna opened the game with an aggressive offensive display, outscoring SCAD 8-0 in the first quarter.
The Bees broke through in the second period, matching the Crusader's pace with five goals of their own, while only allowing one goal, the lowest scoring quarter for Madonna all year.
Sebastian Manuel got SCAD on the board at the 10:33 mark in the second, followed by goals from
Mason Hickman and
Lucas Martinez in quick succession. Manuel and
Gordon Beck rounded out the scoring in the second quarter to go into halftime down four goals (9-5).
In the third quarter, SCAD continued to battle as Hickman found the back of the net three times, along with a goal from
Ian Wildermuth, to maintain the four-goal difference as the Crusaders matched the Bees' effort. Unfortunately, Madonna scored three unanswered goals to head into the final quarter up 17-9.
The Bees added two final goals in the fourth quarter from
Gordon Beck and
Ethan Cline, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome as Madonna went on to win 25-11.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: The Bees finished the afternoon with 33 total shots and 22 shots on goal.
Mason Hickman led the SCAD offense, tying a game-high four goals and one assist, while
Sebastian Manuel paced the playmaking with four assists to go along with two goals, with
Gordon Beck adding two goals.
Lucas Martinez contributed one goal and secured a team-high five ground balls, while
Ethan Cline and
Ian Wildermuth each added a goal to the Bees' tally.
SCAD's defense was led by
Conor Marr with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Beck,
Noah Miller,
Josh Ledina and
Levi Henning added one caused turnover a piece.
In the cage,
Noah Miller recorded 12 saves, while
Keaton Melcher totaled one save.
