Men's Soccer Finishes 2-2 with No. 17 Ga. Gwinnett For Third Straight Draw

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The SCAD men's soccer team showed resilience and fight on the road Wednesday night, twice erasing deficits to earn a 2–2 draw against Georgia Gwinnett at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

The Bees (1-3-3) were immediately put under pressure as the Grizzlies (3-1-2) came out with high intensity, pressing SCAD's backline and forcing early saves from goalkeeper Noa Sonntag. Sonntag was tested repeatedly in the opening 15 minutes, turning away multiple shots before Georgia Gwinnett finally broke through. A strong individual effort in the 16th minute allowed a Grizzly attacker to muscle his way past a defender and finish for the opening goal.

Despite being on the back foot, SCAD responded with composure. Ten minutes later, forward Kimi Husler capitalized on a Georgia Gwinnett giveaway in their defensive third. Pouncing on the loose ball, Husler calmly slotted home his second goal of the season to bring the Bees level at 1–1.

Georgia Gwinnett, known for their physical play, pushed forward once more. In the 38th minute, the Grizzlies weaved their way into the box and rifled a shot from just inside the 18-yard line past Sonntag to retake the lead, 2–1. The Bees nearly equalized again before halftime, with Sebastian Gomez forcing a save and Nils Vallotto testing the keeper from distance, but SCAD went into the break trailing by one.

The second half saw a more composed SCAD side. Adjustments in midfield gave the Bees greater ability to handle Gwinnett's pressing style, and SCAD began creating higher-quality chances. The breakthrough came in the 69th minute after a beautifully worked sequence. Vallotto picked up the ball centrally and slipped it wide to Husler, who delivered a sharp ball across the face of goal. Waiting at the far post was captain Mario Goic, who made no mistake in burying the finish into the bottom corner for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

From there, the match became increasingly physical and cagey. A flurry of fouls and yellow cards were issued as both teams battled for the decisive strike. Sonntag remained sharp, making crucial saves in the 71st and 76th minutes to deny the Grizzlies, while Goic and Gomez led the charge at the other end. SCAD pressed hard late, earning four second-half corner kicks and nearly finding the winner in stoppage time when Gomez slipped behind the defense. However, Georgia Gwinnett's goalkeeper produced one last big save to preserve the 2–2 draw.

Goic finished with a goal and four shots on frame, while Husler delivered one of his best performances of the season, recording both a goal and an assist. Vallotto added a key assist from midfield, and Sonntag tallied seven saves against 16 total Grizzly shots.

Statistically, SCAD proved efficient in attack, with all nine of their shots landing on target. The Bees also showed discipline under pressure, committing just seven fouls compared to 19 from Georgia Gwinnett.

The Bees will look to build on this gritty road result as they continue, confident that their balanced attack and defensive adjustments can carry momentum into conference play.
