AVE MARIA, Fla. – The SCAD women's cross country team won the 2023 Sun Conference Championship with a perfect score. The men's team finished in third. Both teams earned SUN specialty awards.
A PERFECT SCORE: The women's team earned a perfect score of 15, sweeping the top five spots, to win the Sun Conference Title.
DID YOU KNOW? This is the first perfect score in Sun Conference history, on either the men's, or women's, side.
WOMEN'S RESULTS: SCAD swept the first five spots with
Alex Midgett setting a Sun Conference record with her 6K time of 22.13.39, winning the Individual Title in the process.
Edith Manfred finished second, in the field of 72, with a time of 22:47.08 while
Julia Gralki placed third with a time of 22:49.67.
With a time of 23:17.54
Maggie Froning finished in fourth, while
Valentina Garcia finished in fifth with a time of 23:22.55.
SCAD won the championship with 15 points. Ave Maria finished in second with 55 points while Southeastern finished in third with 70 points. With this win, the Bees earned the automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.
MEN'S RESULTS: Max Heins was SCAD's top finisher, placing third overall in the 8K with a time of 26:08.17, earning a spot at the 2023 NAIA National Championship. Joining Heins at Nationals will be
Tom Schroeder who finished fifth, in the field of 70, with a time of 26:19.04.
Dylan Lyons placed in the top 10, finishing seventh with a time of 26:20.49.
The Bees finished third with a score of 51 points. Southeastern won the event with a final score of 40, while Ave Maria finished in second with a score of 49.
SUN SPECIALTY AWARDS: At the conclusion of the Sun Conference Championships, the specialty awards were handed out. On the women's side,
Alex Midgett was named the Runner of the Year,
Edith Manfred was named the Freshman of the Year, and Head Coach
Andy Knapp, was named the Coach of the Year.
On the men's side,
Max Heins was named the Freshman of the Year.
