QUICK SCORE: The No. 1 ranked SCAD women's lacrosse team showed why they are deserving of the top-spot Saturday night when they defeated No. 2 Benedictine 18-12 in the NAIA National Invitational Championship Final.
RECORDS: The Bees end the season with a 14-1 record while giving the Ravens their only loss of the season for a 17-1 overall record.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Drew Dowgiallo gave the Bees a 1-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the game off an assist from
Jordan Mitchell.
Mitchell scored not even three minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.
The Ravens scored at the 15:10 mark but SCAD answered with two goals from
Allison Thierry and
Mackenzie DeMott to go up 4-1 at the 13:38 mark.
The Bees out-scored the Ravens 4-2 for the remainder of the half to take an 8-3 lead into halftime.
DeMott and Mitchell opened the second half with goals at the 29:12 and 25:36 marks and the Ravens answered with two goals of their own with the second coming with 22:42 to come within five (10-5).
SCAD answered with five goals – Dowgiallo (2), Team, DeMott (2) to take a 10-goal lead with 17:14 remaining in the game.
Benedictine out-scored SCAD 7-3 – SCAD's goals coming from Knego,
Aly De Caro and Knego – in the remaining 17 minutes but it was not enough as the Bee's held on to win 18-12.
BY THE NUMBERS: DeMott led the offensive charge with five goals and one assist for six points.
Knego, Dowgiallo and Mitchell scored three goals each with Mitchell and Knego adding three and two assists, respectively.
Thierry totaled two goals and one assist while De Caro tallied one goal.
Olivia Stahl,
Harper Barth and
Jenna Nabridge all added one assist.
Tatum Crouch had a team-high six ground balls and tied a game-high five caused turnovers while Mitchell and Stahl added four ground balls.
Knego nabbed a game-high 13 draw controls.
Goalie
Maggie Lortz earned the win with a record-breaking 23 saves in 55 minutes of work.
Liv Vieira totaled one save in her five minutes.
TOURNEMENT HIGHLIGHTS: Sydney Knego scored her 200
th career goal with her last goal in the Bees' 17-8 win over Keiser University in the semi-final game on Friday night.
Maggie Lortz broke the program record in saves in a single game with her 23 saves against Benedictine in the final Saturday night. The previous record (21) was set by
Jenny Danko versus Indiana Tech in 2013.
Jordan Mitchell was named the NAIA National Invitational Tournament MVP at the conclusion of the tournament.

Emma Devereaux were named to the 2019 All-Tournament Team.
