Tennis Opens Fall Season at Panther Invite

QUICK STORY: The SCAD men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Florida Tech for the Florida Tech Panther Invitational Friday-Sunday, September 14-16 to open their fall seasons.
 
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: There were two draws (Round Robin and Compass) in the invite depending on flight. In the Round Robin, players play everyone in their flight. In the Compass Draw, players start in neutral and if they win they move into gold and if they lose they move into red.
 
MEN'S SINGLES ACTION: Mateo Fernandez went 1-2 on the day in Flight C Singles. Fernandez lost the first two matches and won the third.
 
Daiki Naka lost his first two matches and won the third for a 1-2 weekend in Flight A.
 
Eloy Veloso lost his three Flight B matches with his third-round match going three sets (4-6, 6-4, 10-7).
 
WOMEN'S SINGLES ACTION: Valerie Droop went 1-2 in Flight B singles. She lost her first match, won the second and then lost the final match in Flight B Red.
 
Nicole Katzarkov finished the invite with a 2-1 Flight E Gold singles record.
 
Haley Morrissey went 0-3 on the weekend. She dropped her first match in Flight A gold and the next two in Flight A red.
 
Candace Mortier went undefeated (3-0) in singles Flight F.
 
Priya Sukkahana finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, winning her first two matches in Flight A gold. She fell 6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-3 in the final. 
 
Tova Tobrand went 1-2 in Flight D gold and red. Losing the first match to send her to red. She then proceeded to lose the second round and win the third.
 
Brittany Waugh won one match in the Flight G Round Robin and then went 1-2 in the Flight F Round Robin.
 
Johanna Webber went undefeated, winning all three matches in Flight C gold.
 
MEN'S DOUBLES ACTION: Naka and Veloso lost in the first round of Flight A doubles and then won the second 6-3. The duo fell 6-3 in round three.
 
WOMEN'S DOUBLES ACTION: Droop and Morrissey lost the first doubles match 6-2.
 
Katzarkov and Mortier fell 6-1 in their first doubles match.
 
Weber and Sukkahana won their first doubles match in Flight A gold. They then went on to lose the second and win the third with a score of 6-3.
 
Tobrand and Waugh won the first two matches 6-2 and 6-4. The pair lost 6-0 in the Flight B gold final.
 
WORDS FROM COACH O: "Considering this is the end of the first week of classes, the first week of practice and the first tournament of the year, the men's and women's tennis teams improved steadily every day" states Head Coach Ken Obermeier. "If both teams can maintain this level of progress, this year has the potential to be outstanding."
 
WHAT'S NEXT? The Bees will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the ITA Regionals on September 26-29.
