MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 19 SCAD Savannah men's tennis team defeated No. 15 Reinhardt in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament. They will face No. 2 Xavier on Wednesday, May 17 at 9:00 a.m.
According to Head Coach
Ken Obermeier, "today was a solid day for men's tennis. The team played a very good Reinhardt team. We competed well from the beginning, winning two of the three doubles matches. Our singles play was strong enough to edge out the victory.
Josh Tewes-McCoy, Daiki Naka and
Yulin Liu clinched the win for us."
The Bees took a 2-1 lead at the end of doubles with Naka and Liu defeating their opponents 8-3 at number two doubles while
Quentin Staley and Tewes-McCoy won 8-5 at number three doubles.
Sean Hajdu and
Mateo Fernandez dropped their number one doubles match 8-5.
Fernandez fell 6-1, 6-1 at number six singles to tie the score at 2-2.
Naka won his number two singles match (6-2, 6-1) to give SCAD the 3-2 lead. Staley lost 6-4, 6-1 to tie the match at three-all.
Reinhardt took the lead when Hajdu fell 6-1, 6-2 at number one singles.
Tewes-McCoy followed with a win (6-4, 6-3) to tie the match once again (4-4).
Liu was the deciding match, and with his win (6-3, 6-4) at number three singles sent the Bees to the next round.
