Naples, Florida - The 21st-ranked SCAD men's tennis team swept the doubles matches en route to an 8-1 win over Ave Maria Sunday afternoon at the AMU Tennis Courts. With the win the Bees improve to 1-2 overall and 1-2 against The Sun Conference, while the Gyrenes fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
SCAD got off to a fast start picking up 8-1 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Kenta Naka and Josh Tewes-McCoy rallied to force a tiebreaker. Naka and Tewes-McCoy won the tiebreaker 7-4 to give the Bees a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Daiki Naka extended SCAD's lead to 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Ave Maria cut the lead to 4-1 before Mateo Fernandez's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles clinched the match.
With the match already clinched the final two singles matches played one set to eight points. Quentin Staley won 8-1 at No. 4 singles, while Corrie Pickering won 8-5 at No. 5 singles.
At No. 3 singles, Yulin Liu won the first set 6-4, before dropping the second set 4-6. Liu won the deciding set 10-6 for the 8-1 final.
The Bees will return to the court next weekend when they travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia for a pair of games. SCAD will face fourth-ranked Xavier Friday at 3 p.m. and then play 22nd-ranked Cumberland Saturday at 6 p.m.
