Box Score Hardeeville, South Carolina – SCAD's six seniors combined for 12 goals and four assists as the top-ranked women's lacrosse team defeated Ave Maria 22-2 to clinch the top seed in the south region tournament Sunday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex. The Bees will host Ave Maria next Sunday, April 19, at noon in the South Region championship game.
SCAD (11-2, 1-0) struck first as
Charlotte Cutts connected with
Kayla Nelson for a goal 13 seconds into the game. Minutes later, Cutts converted a free position shot and then found
Shannon Flaherty cutting towards the cage to extend the Bees lead to 3-0.
Charlotte Walters netted back-to-back goals to give SCAD the 5-0 advantage ten minutes into the contest. The Gyrenes (3-9; 0-1) cut the lead to 5-1, before
Taylor Vaccaro put a well-placed free position shot past the goalie. Then Vaccaro found Nelson in front of the cage for a goal to give SCAD a 7-1 lead. Cutts won the ensuing draw control and on the Bees possession
Shaina Levin scored her first goal of the season to give SCAD the 8-1 advantage midway through the first half. SCAD scored five straight goals, including one from
Jordan Cook and
Tori Alexander, to take a 13-1 lead at the break.
It was a similar story in the second half as Walters and
Alyssa Stetson each converted a free position shot to give the Bees a 15-1 lead. SCAD scored seven unanswered goals, including two from
Sophie Cutts, to take a 22-1 lead with 4:18 remaining. Kaylin Mayeski scored an unassisted goal for Ave Maria for the 22-2 final.
Nelson and Cutts tied for the team-high in points as they each tallied five. Walters finished with four goals, while Vacarro,
Joanna Ehatt, Cutts, and
Kirsten Carr each tallied two points.
Jenny Danko made five saves in the cage to improve her record to 11-2 this season.
