M. Tennis Eliminated in Rd. 1 of TSC Championships

4/18/2014 8:55:00 AM

The Men's Tennis team was eliminated in the first round of The Sun Conference Championship Tournament held in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The first quarterfinal match was an exciting four-hour affair.  SCAD took an early 2-1 lead after doubles, but Northwood notched singles victories at the first, second and sixth positions, to take a 4-3 lead. The final two singles matches, on courts four and five, both went to three sets, leaving the team outcome in question.

The deciding match came at the fifth position where Jacob Alplund rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to top Manatsa Mazimbe 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to score the clinching point.  The Seahawks will face Embry-Riddle in the semis on Friday.

After SCAD's No. 2 doubles team Joao Freitas/Darnell Sgubin and No. 3 team Zach White/Manatsa Mazimbe won their doubles competitions, the Bees needed only three wins in the singles competitions to advance to the second round of the conference championship; however, Sgubin was the only Bee to finish the singles competitions with a SCAD victory.  Brand had a lead in his match, but it was discontinued when Northwood completed their other singles' matches with the four wins necessary to advance to the second round.
