SCAD Celebrates Another NWLL Regional Championship

4/13/2014 11:58:00 AM

The Women's Lacrosse Team has accomplished what it had set out to do from the first game of the 2014 season.  They captured the South Region NWLL Championship.  The Lady Bees took their 11-0 regular season record and travelled to Columbia, S.C. as the No. 1 seed.  The ladies had a "bye" on the first day of the 2-day regional championship because they had won their division.  The ladies would have two games remaining to capture the prize.

Tennessee Wesleyan University – Semifinal Game
On Saturday, SCAD faced Tennessee Wesleyan University in the semifinal game.  The winner would play in the finals to take place later in the day.  And the ladies did not disappoint.  The Bees had played Tennessee Wesleyan earlier in the season (2/22/14) and had come away with a 17-6 victory, but a team cannot take any opponent for granted.  So the ladies did what they had done so well during the season - they played to their abilities, rather than to the opponent's level of play.

It was another offensive day for SCAD.  They had averaged 16 goals a game for the 10 games they played (one game was a forfeit).  This time the Bees scored 14 on their way to their 12th consecutive win without a defeat.  The final score was 14-7.  Kayla Nelson scored 3 times to raise her season's total to team leading thirty-seven.  But, as usual with the Bees, the goals and assists were spread among 9 different SCAD players.

Once again the ladies had a good draw control game, with SCAD winning 15 of 23.   Torii Clark led the way with three.  And there is Jenny Danko.  She had another double figure save game with 11 out of the 18 shots on goal.

The ladies now had one more game to win.

Reinhardt University – Regional Title Game
Having beaten the Reinhardt Eagles 20-11 on 2/14/14 the Lady Bees could have taken them for granted, but that has never been the way that Coach Nichole Hannon and Assistant Coach Alexis Spaide approach a game.

With a few hours break between the two games played today SCAD picked up where it had left off in game one.  They came out with victory on their minds.  They surpassed their average number of goals by scoring 19 times in the title game.  This time the scoring and assists were spread among 10 different players.

Kayla Nelson once again led the way with 5 goals scored, but she scored only 1 more than Haley Fauvelle, who ended up with four.  Jordan Cook had a particularly good game by providing a season high 6 assists, bringing her total on the season to 15 - third on the team behind Charlotte Cutts (17) and Nelson (16).  The Bees never let up and ended the game with a 19-10 victory and another NWLL South Regional Championship Title.  The win continues SCAD's historic run of 13 consecutive victories without a loss.

SCAD had a number of its athletes selected to the South Region All-Conference team.  Charlotte Walters and Shaina Levin were chosen 2nd Team All-Conference.  Charlotte Cutts, Jenny Danko, Jordan Cook, and Kayla Nelson were recognized as 1st Team All-Conference.  Charlotte Cutts received two prestigious honors by the NWLL.  Cutts was selected the Offensive Player of the Year and also the Player of the Year for 2014.  Congratulations to these ladies for their recognitions.

The hope for SCAD is to keep this going as they travel to Linderwood-Belleville, Illinois, for the NWLL National Championships on April 17-19.  The Lady Bees are on a quest for an unprecedented third straight national lacrosse championship.  Can they do it?
