Men Suffer First Conference Loss to Webber 6-3

3/30/2014 9:15:00 PM

SCAD had its first conference loss of the season today 6-3 at Webber International.  This brings the men to a 4-4 record overall and 3-1 in conference play.

After losing at No. 1 doubles the SCAD team of Darnell Sgubin and Joao Freitas was even with Webber at the number 2 spot, but then Webber pulled away leaving SCAD down 2-0.  Bobby Brand and Yulin Liu rallied back to pull out a 9-8 win at the three spot to bring the men to within one at 1-2.

In singles, the Bees went down quickly in the number 1 and 6 spots; however, Sgubin brought the match score to 4-2 with a win at the number 4 spot.  His win gave the Bees a reminder of what had happened in the two previous matches that SCAD played.  Down 1-4 to Oklahoma Baptist on 3/21 and 2-4 to Southeastern on 3/22, the men came back and won both those matches.

But there was no miraculous comeback for the Bees today.  In the final three matches, the men could only salvage one win.  Brand won his match at number 5 by a score of 7-6, 2-6 (10-5); however, with losses at numbers 2 and 6 the Bees experienced its first conference team loss of the season.  Junior Bobby Brand had a good day on the court by winning at doubles with his partner Yulin Liu, and then winning his singles match at number 5.
