The SCAD Men travelled to Ave Maria to play its second conference match of the 2014 season. The Bees were 1-0 in conference play thanks to a close 5-4 win against St. Thomas two days ago.
This time the men left no doubt as to the outcome. That is, after they took all three of the doubles matches from the Gyrenes. The matches were hard fought with long points and very few breaks, but the Bees prevailed in all three matches giving the singles the opportunity to move to 2-0 in The Sun Conference.
And the singles followed through. After
Jack Anton went down at the No. 1 spot in straight sets,
Darnell Sgubin picked the Bees up by winning in straight sets, although his second set was the toughest win of the day. He prevailed 7-5 to give SCAD a chance to take the overall win at Nos. 3 and 4. But when
Manatsa Mazimbe had to withdraw in the second of his two sets it was up to the Nos. 4 and 5 teams.
Thankfully,
Joao Freitas took control of his match by defeating Ave Maria's No. 4 in straight sets 6-2 and 6-2. Not to be outdone,
Yulin Liu followed up the victory by dominating his No. 5 opponent 6-1 and 6-1.
Theo Gough had the toughest win of all the Bees. Playing at No. 6, Gough was the only Bee to go three sets, but he made the most of it by winning a very competitive match in the pro set 10-6.
The Bees had their second victory of the season. Overall the men are 2-3, but both of their wins were conference competitions. The Bees has a very good day.
