Men’s Tennis Defeats St. Thomas 5-4

3/18/2014 10:17:00 PM

The SCAD Men's Tennis Team experienced its first win in the 2014 season.  In its third match of the season the Bees defeated St. Thomas in Miami Gardens, Florida 5-4 to bring their record to 1-2.

In double competition the Bees No. 1 team of Jack Anton and Yulin Liu lost a close one to St. Thomas 8-9 (2) after coming back from 0-6.  The No. 2 team of Darnell Sgubin and Joao Freitas took control and never let St. Thomas into the match and won 8-2.  The No. 3 team of Manatsa Mazimbe and Theo Gough had a couple of lead changes in the match, but could not endure.  They lost their match 3-8.

It all came down to singles play with the Bees down 1-2.  SCAD needed 4 wins out of the next six matches to take the win.

Anton gave the Bees a good start by winning at No.1 in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.  Theo Gough had a difficult time at No. 2 losing 1-6, 0-6.  The Bees were down 2-3 and needed to win 3 of the next 4 matches.   Freitas gave SCAD a boost by winning at No.3 6-2, 6-2.  It was all even going into the final three matches of the day.

Mazimbe kept the momentum going for the Bees by defeating his No. 4 opponent in straight sets 7-6 and 6-3.  When Liu lost at No. 6 in a long match 5-7, 4-6, it came down to Sgubin, playing at No. 5, to bring SCAD its first victory.  And Sgubin did it in fine fashion.  He won in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2.  The Bees had its first victory of the season.

The Bees will be back at it tomorrow when they travel to Boca Raton to take on Florida Atlantic.  Keep it going Bees!!
