HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – Junior
John Healy scored five first-half goals to lead the Savannah College of Art and Design men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 victory over previously undefeated Coastal Carolina University on Friday (March 14) afternoon.
With the critical region win, SCAD improved its mark to 6-4 while the Chanticleers fell to 6-1.
The Bees knew they would have their hands full attempting to contain Coastal Carolina's high-flying offense which was a unit that had scored no fewer than 10 goals in any game this year while also scoring a whopping 30 goals in a 30-1 win over Winthrop University. After the Chanticleers tied the game at 2 early in the first period, SCAD's defensive unit - led be the ferocious play of
Rocco Avellino - put the clamps on their visitors for the rest of the afternoon.
With the Bees defense swarming to every loose ball and goalie
Kenan Degirmenci turning away several close scoring Coastal Carolina attempts, SCAD suddenly grabbed momentum and took control of the proceedings.
Healy lit up the Chanticleer defense to the tune of five goals in the first half, as SCAD blasted its way to a 10-2 halftime lead. Despite the fact that the second half would see the Bees outscored 3-2, thanks to the dominance of the SCAD defense, the outcome had ceased to be in question.
Stewart Yost and
Kyle Narkiewicz joined the Bees' hit parade with three and two goals respectively while
Charles Pate and
Erik Elmquist also contributed a goal in for SCAD in the win.
The Bees return to action Sunday (March 16) as they square off against Palm Beach Atlantic University at the SCAD Athletics Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
