HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - John Healy,
Peter Callahan,
Kyle Narkiewicz and E.A. Spencer Gray led a relentless scoring attack as the Savannah College of Art and Design men's lacrosse team exploded for seven goals in the third period to break open a tight game and defeat Eckerd College 16-3 at the SCAD Athletics Complex Sunday (Feb. 10) afternoon.
The win moves 11th-ranked SCAD's record to 2-1.
Both teams seemed more intent on slashing one another with their sticks instead of denting the scoreboard as both teams failed to register a goal in the opening period. The scoring drought would not last for long however as Callahan scored 30 seconds into the second frame with a quick wrist shot in front of the net. It seemed like the senior would tally a second goal moments later as
Charles Pate led a furious breakaway to feed Callahan, only to see Callahan's rocker carom off the post.
The Bees would continue the attack and score four times before the half with Narkiewicz scoring twice and Yost and Healy finding an opening to give SCAD a 5-0 advantage as the halftime horn sounded.
The second half started with a bang, and this time it was a successful defensive rush that jump-started the SCAD scoring machine. Defenseman
Rocco Avellino picked up a loose ball and sprinted to the attack zone where he fired a pass to Healy who immediately found Callahan in front of the net. Callahan seemingly in motion before Healy's pass reached him, Triton goal Brandon Shane simply had no chance as Callahan's bullet found the back of the net to give the Bees a 6-0 lead.
After Eckerd's Mike Russell ended the shutout with 9:42 left in the period, SCAD quickly went back to work, as Healy, Gray,
A.J. Getz and
Michael Molinaro all scored within a span of 2:22 to extend the Bees lead to 10-1. A goal by Eckerd's Matt Loftis was offset by scoring strikes by
Stewart Yost and Healy to extend SCAD's lead to 12-2 as the team's headed into the final period, during which Gray, Healy, Yost and Narkiewicz would all score again to cap off the Bees 16-3 win.
Healy led all scorers with four goals while Yost and Narkiewicz chipped in with three goals apiece. Callahan and Gray each scored a pair of goals for SCAD.
The Bees will hit the road to take on Rollins College Friday (Feb. 15) at 4 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla.
