HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -
A.J. Barrett's first-half penalty kick was the difference as the No. 6 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University men's soccer team held off the Savannah College of Art and Design 1-0 in a conference match Saturday (Oct. 4) evening at the SCAD Athletics Complex.

The Eagles improved to 5-1-3 overall and remained in first place in The Sun Conference at 3-0-1. SCAD fell to 4-5-2 and 2-3-1. SCAD returns to action Saturday (Oct.11) with a 7 p.m. league home match against Northwood (Fla.) University.

Barrett scored his second goal of the season at the 21:52 mark on a penalty kick after Sam Litchfield was taken down in the box.

SCAD, which didn't record a single shot in the opening 45 minutes, tallied nine shots in the second half. The Bees had two great opportunities to tie the match midway through the second half. Ellert Hreinsson played the ball to Karl Sjostrom at the top of the box. Sjostrom fired off a shot, but backup goalie Alfredo Diaz was able to make a diving save. Moments later Sjostrom blasted another shot; however, Diaz was able to get a finger on the ball and deflect it over the top of the goal.

Embry-Riddle held a 13-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 margin in shots on goal. SCAD goalkeeper Robbie Wright stopped eight shots while Viktor Bergstrand and Diaz combined to register three saves for the Eagles.
