HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Melissa Feuerriegel scored twice and assisted on another as the Savannah College of Art and Design women's soccer team defeated Webber International University 5-2 Sunday (Oct. 26) afternoon at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The 13th-ranked Bees improved to 9-4-0 overall and moved into a share of first place in The Sun Conference with a 7-1-0 record. Webber International fell to 7-5-1 and 4-4-0. SCAD's next scheduled match is Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. against Thomas (Ga.) University in Thomasville, Ga.
Webber International took a 1-0 lead at the 13:51 mark. Taylor Larochelle took a shot from midfield off a direct kick that SCAD goalkeeper
Rosanna Lamprey couldn't handle cleanly. Jenny Simmons converted the ricochet into a score for the Warriors.
The Bees, who outshot Webber International 38-7 (22-3 advantage on goal), tied the match at 1 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. Feuerriegel took a short corner from
Haley Walker and crossed it to
Mary-Kate Sliter at the far post who knocked it past WIU goalkeeper Kelsey Coates for her third goal of the season. SCAD took the lead for good three minutes later as Sliter returned the favor to Feuerriegel.
SCAD took a 3-1 lead at the 59:27 mark on
Shelby Simon's second goal of the season off an assist from
Amanda Barj. Feuerriegel scored her team-leading 14th goal of 2008 off a
Katie Putnam cross in the 71st minute. WIU got a goal back on Magen Carey's 14th score of the season six minutes later. The Bees closed out the scoring on
Selin Kuralay's seventh goal of the season off a Putnam through ball with just over three minutes remaining.
