HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Amanda Barj's goal with 2:50 remaining in the second overtime game the Savannah College of Art and Design a 3-2 The Sun Conference women's soccer victory over Northwood (Fla.) University on a rainy Saturday (Oct. 11) evening at the SCAD Athletics Complex.
The Bees, who are ranked 16th in the NAIA, improved to 7-4-0 overall and to 5-1-0 in the league as SCAD won its third consecutive overtime match. SCAD, which earned its first-ever win against the Seahawks in the all-time series (1-7-3), will return to the pitch Sunday (Oct. 12) at 2 p.m. when they host St. Thomas (Fla.) University in another TSC match. Northwood, which is ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 10-1-0 and 5-1-0.
Barj's deciding goal came after she collected a pass from teammate
Mary-Kate Sliter at the top of the box and fired off a shot past the outstretched handed of Seahawk goalkeeper Mia Moeller into the left corner of the goal. It was Barj's third goal of 2008.
The Bees had sent the match into extra time when Sliter scored with 1:18 remaining in regulation. Sliter's second goal of the season came when she got a loose ball near the top of the box and was able to beat her defender and able to get it past Moeller, who had four saves.
SCAD took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute as they took advantage of an own goal. SCAD's
Jordan Luciano took a direct kick that Northwood starting goalie Didi Jurman tried to punch it out of the box. However, the ball deflected off a Seahawk defender into the goal.
Northwood took advantage of the heavy rains that fell during the opening minutes of the match into two second-half goals. Jurman, who was moved to the field at the start of the second half, got to the ball first after it had stopped due to a puddle in the box and beat SCAD goalkeeper
Rosanna Lamprey for her sixth goal of the season in the 60th minute.
Northwood was forced to play a person down after Johanna Andersson was sent off with a red card in the 67th minute; however, the Seahawks took a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick two minutes later by Sofia Soras. Northwood got the opportunity when Lamprey, who had five saves, deflected a shot and the ball skidded off a patch of water and hit a SCAD defender in the hand.
