ATLANTA—Sourosh Amani had a hand in all three Berry College goals as the Vikings defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design men's soccer team 3-0 at Silverbacks Park Wednesday (Sept. 5) morning.
The Vikings, who had fallen to No. 20 in this week's NAIA Top 25 poll, remained unbeaten at 3-0-0, while the Bees, who fell to No. 23 in the same ranking, lost their second straight contest to fall to 1-2-0. SCAD returns to action when they host Northwood (Fla.) University in a 7 p.m. Florida Sun Conference match Saturday (Sept. 8) at the Delta Soccer Complex.
Amani broke the deadlock in the 27th minute as he beat SCAD goalkeeper
Tommi Sarkkinen one-on-one after stealing the ball off a defensive miscue. Amani then doubled the Berry lead just four minutes into the second half. Teja Barkmann found him in space and he fired a long-distance effort towards the goal. Sarkkinen appeared to reach the ball in time but could only deflect the ball into the side netting of his own goal.
Just 10 minutes later Amani was involved in the third Berry goal, this time as the provider. His corner kick in the 59th minute found the Barkmann who headed past Sarkkinen, who registered four saves, at the near post.
After Berry took the 3-0 lead, SCAD began to pressure the Berry goal by outshooting the Vikings 10-6 in the second half. The best chance came in the 83rd minute when
Josiah Millar broke through the Berry defense, but had his near-post shot saved by Berry's Mike Wentzler, who finished the day with seven saves and posted his third consecutive shutout.
