DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A first-half goal by Ryan Gadhue was all the 20th-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design men's soccer team needed to top Florida Sun Conference opponent Embry-Riddle University 1-0 Wednesday (Sept. 26) evening at the ERAU Soccer Stadium

The victory lifted the Bees to the top spot in the conference at 4-1-0 (6-2-0 overall), while the No. 12 Eagles fall to 3-3-1 overall and are 3-1-1 in league play. SCAD returns to the pitch Saturday (Sept. 29) with a 7 p.m. contest in St. Augustine, Fla., against Flagler College.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half with SCAD holding an 8-6 edge in shots, including a Richard Hurlin penalty kick attempt that was just wide of the right post at the 11:26 mark.

SCAD eventually broke through in the 23rd minute. ERAU goalkeeper Ian Levine got a hand to Gadhue's header, but Levine was unable to hold the ball and it dropped into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was the first collegiate goal for the junior forward from Lincoln, Vt.

The Eagles had a few opportunities to even the score in the second half, but solid defending by the Bees thwarted the ERAU efforts and preserved the win.

Levine finished the night with five saves, while his SCAD counterpart Tommi Sarkkinen, who notched his fourth shutout of the season, collected three.
