BABSON PARK, Fla. —
Freshmen Amanda Barj and Nicola Daffey each scored twice as the Savannah College of Art and Design defeated Webber International University 5-2 Friday (Sept. 21) afternoon in the Florida Sun Conference women's soccer opener for both squads.

SCAD won its sixth consecutive match and improved to 7-1-0 overall and to 1-0-0. It's the best start for the Bees since the 2000 squad began the season with 10 consecutive victories. The Warriors fell to 2-6-0 and 0-1-0. SCAD returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 23) with a FSC match against Warner Southern College in Lake Wales, Fla.

The Bees took a 1-0 lead in the match that was delayed by 90 minutes due to bad weather when Angela Kowalski notched her first goal of the 2007 season at the 38:54 mark off an assist from Melissa Hagerty. The Warriors tied the match at 1 nearly three minutes later on a goal from Jenny Simmons. SCAD took the lead for good 42 seconds later on the first of two goals from Barj. Teammate Melissa Feuerriegel played it to the top of the box and Barj was able to finish the play.

SCAD, which outshot Webber International 29-5, made it 3-1 on another goal from Barj at the 52:00 mark. Hagerty went up for a strong challenge near midfield and was able to head it to Barj, who knocked it past WIU goalkeeper Kim Brown for her third goal of the season.

Webber International closed to within a goal at 3-2 after Amy Surrency converted at the 66:51 mark as the Bees had trouble clearing the ball out of the backfield. The Bees took control of the match as Daffey scored twice in a five-minute period. Daffey scored the first one off a throw in from Mary-Kate Sliter, as Daffey was able to turn around her defender and shot it into the far corner of the goal. On the final goal, Jordan Luciano played the ball wide to Sliter, who took it to the end line and found Daffey open from 10 yards out.

Brown registered 15 saves for the Warriors, while Laura Hansen tallied two for the Bees.
